Free tier users will lose model choice, and $4.99 AI Plus subscribers will lose Gemini Pro access too.
Google will limit free Gemini users to the Flash Lite model starting October 9. Free accounts currently pick between Flash Lite, Flash, and Pro. Access to the standard Flash model will require a $4.99 monthly Google AI Plus subscription, and that tier is losing Gemini Pro as well.
Google separates Gemini access across several paid tiers. AI Plus costs $4.99 per month, AI Pro costs $19.99 per month, and AI Ultra costs $99.99 per month. After the change, Gemini Pro and the Deep Think advanced reasoning option will sit behind the AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions only. Google says it will email AI Plus subscribers before their access changes.
Teams that route production traffic through free Gemini Pro calls need a new plan. Options include paying for AI Pro at $19.99 per month, moving to competing model providers, or shifting workloads to Flash Lite. Higher effort settings can also drain usage limits faster, so operators should track token consumption per model tier.
The change takes effect October 9. Google plans to notify AI Plus subscribers by email ahead of their Gemini Pro cutoff, though the exact date remains unset. Builders should confirm which model each internal tool calls and test fallbacks before free and mid-tier access narrows further.
