The actor sold his AI filmmaking startup to Netflix, visited OpenAI, and says he can also write Python.
Ben Affleck went viral this week after clips from a GQ interview showed him discussing machine learning, neural networks, transformers, tensors, GPUs, and inference. The actor also said he can write Python scripts and explained how visual effects workflows use convolutional neural networks for tasks like edge detection and feature extraction.
Affleck earlier sold his AI filmmaking startup to Netflix for a reported $587 million, though he disputes that figure and notes he did not own the whole company. He told interviewer Zach Baron that he became interested in the field as analog film moved to digital and later visited OpenAI to learn about emerging AI technology.
Builders and studio operators can treat Affleck’s breakdown as a reminder that AI adoption in filmmaking centers on established workflows like edge detection, feature extraction, and green screen replacement. His startup sale also signals that entertainment companies see value in tools that work with artists rather than replace them.
Affleck disputes the reported $587 million price for his startup sale to Netflix and says he did not own the whole company. Observers should watch whether Netflix details how it will integrate the technology into production pipelines or whether Affleck shares more specifics about his AI work.
